In 1867, the Austrian Empire struck a deal with Hungary — the Ausgleich — creating the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary. But what if that compromise never happened? After Austria’s defeat to Prussia and Italy in 1866, Hungary would declare independence and the would Balkans ignite. Russia likely makes moves against Austria in the 1870s, rather than the Ottomans. Just like that, the whole game has shifted in Europe, as France and Britain are going to protect the Ottomans, leading to the Balkan Minorities to be under Ottoman Rule for much longer, but also an alternate Great War would be considerably different.
