Na Stol iz Završnice – ena najlepših krožnih tur v Karavankah

The ascent to Stol, the highest peak of the Karavanke, is always a special experience – especially when you visit it in almost winter conditions in mid-April. Although we are already deep into spring, the conditions on the hike were completely winter-like. However, the weather was perfect: sunny, pleasantly warm, and windless, making it an ideal day for a longer mountain tour. For the starting point, I chose the Završnica Valley, more precisely the parking area near Tinčkova koča. From there, I set off on an unmarked trail that runs through the valley between Stol and Srednji vrh. The path is beautiful but lonely and quite far from the more popular routes, which gives a special sense of peace and authenticity. After a relatively steep ascent, the trail led me to a powerful cirque in the very heart of the Karavanke – a truly impressive mountain basin surrounded by high cliffs. Here I joined the marked trail coming from Zelenica towards Stol and continued towards the summit at 2,236 meters. For a while, the trail runs along the valley floor, scattered with large boulders – a scene that is truly a feast for the eyes. This is also a true kingdom of chamois. Due to the remoteness of the trail, there are not many hikers here even in summer, so nature retains its original peace. In the final section, there is a steep scree ascent that leads to the saddle between Veliki Stol and Mali Stol. From there, only a few more minutes of walking remain to the summit. From the top of Stol, the views are always a reward for the effort – stretching across much of the Karavanke, deep into the Julian Alps and across Gorenjska, and of course also towards Slovenia and neighboring Austria. For the descent, I chose a circular route: the trail leads over Mali Stol and continues towards the beautiful Zabreška planina, from where an easy path brings you back down into the Završnica Valley. This is an extremely beautiful circular hike that is not technically demanding but is quite long. In summer conditions, it is suitable for all hikers with good fitness who are prepared to walk for around 7 hours.
