8 Hours in Dresden: Is a Day Trip from Berlin Worth It?

Only two to three hours from Berlin by either train or bus is Dresden, the capital city of the state of Saxony. Known for having been firebombed and almost completely destroyed in the late stages of World War 2, the city was largely rebuilt in socialist modernist style during the German Democratic Republic (1949-90). I recently decided to take day trip from Berlin to see if about 8 hours in Dresden is enough to get a flavour of the city.
