Why NATO Rejected Italy's Eight Wheeled Tank Killer — Then Secretly Built One of Their Own

Centauro B1. NATO rejected Italy's eight wheeled tank killer as a joke. Then every army that laughed secretly built one of their own. The B1 Centauro is an Italian eight wheeled armoured tank destroyer armed with a one hundred and five millimetre cannon capable of over one hundred kilometres per hour on roads. Built by the Iveco Fiat and OTO Melara consortium, roughly four hundred were produced between nineteen ninety one and two thousand six. NATO allies dismissed the wheeled tank killer concept as too lightly armored to survive real combat. Italy deployed it to Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Lebanon, and Ukraine where its speed and range outperformed every tracked vehicle in those theatres. The United States tested the Centauro at Fort Lewis then built the Stryker. Japan studied it then built the Type Sixteen. In two thousand twenty five Ukrainian crews used the Centauro to strike a Russian position from over eleven kilometres away. The armies that rejected Italy's eight wheeled tank killer now operate their own versions.
