But East Coulee refuses to die. In today’s video we will do a short driving tour around East Coulee and talk about its history and what remains today. East Coulee is now considered part of the town of Drumheller in Alberta Canada even though it is about 20 km SE of the town proper. East Coulee began in the 1920s and was a very enterprising location by the 1930s and 1940s. Over 3840 residents called it home. It was primarily a coal town and many worked in the nearby coal mines. However, as coal became less important due to natural gas and oil, the community started a slow decline. In the 1950s the population began to plummet and businesses closed. By the 1960s only a a hotel, a garage and small grocery store remained. In the 1970s the only school in town closed its doors. In the 1970s through to the 1990s the town population dropped each year to just 60 residents and it looked like it would finally become a complete ghost town. In 2006, an effort was made to revitalize the town and people started moving back. Houses were just $8000 to $20000. 2013 saw massive flooding across Alberta and East Coulee was subjected to flooding. Real Estate plummeted and people started moving out once again. Last year the town of Drumheller saved East Coulee by putting up a large berm to redirect any future flood waters. Today East Coulee remains inhabited and it would make for a great rehabilitation area. The East Coulee School is now a museum and a tourist attraction for the area. Today the population is just over 200, with many of the original miners dwellings being restored. Home prices here seem to fluctuate up and down constantly. In recent times the prices have been astronomical.
