The town was once the centre of an oil and natural gas boom. For 30 years, the Turner Valley oilfields were a major supplier of oil and gas and the largest producer in the British Empire. The gas plants ceased operation in 1985, but the historical buildings and site dating back to 1914 still remain as a tourist attraction. Turner Valley is quickly becoming a tourist hotspot for those venturing from Calgary. Kananaskis Country, approximately 25 km o the west, offers camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, fishing and bird watching. Recreation venues include the 18-hole semi-private Turner Valley Golf and Country Club, outdoor Dr. Lander Memorial Pool, an outdoor rink and skateboard park, and Friendship Trail, 3 km paved link to nearby Black Diamond. Turner Valley also has some amazing restaurants and also a whisky distillery offering some very fine drinks. Let’s drive around and see what Turner Valley looks like on this fall day. Turner Valley’s population is just under 2600. Houses here are getting very expensive with an average price of $500,000. Rentals are just insane with basements renting for $2000 and whole houses for $3000 and up per month plus utilities. Most people work and shop in Black Diamond, Okotoks or Calgary as there is not many options here. Crime here is 16% higher than the national average, but most of it tends to be property crime. With it being close to Calgary, Turner Valley is an ideal bedroom community, retirement spot or recreational hot spot.
