With this information, the driver can know if the engine is within the ideal rotation for the speed and if this is compatible with the next maneuver the driver intends to make in the next few seconds. It is possible to install a tachometer in a car that does not have this accessory from the factory, but it is necessary to know where to collect the engine signal to make the indicator work correctly. All universal tachometers have at least 3 wires: the negative wire, which is connected to the car's ground; the positive wire, which is connected to signal 15 of the car; and the green wire, which is connected to the wire with the pulsating negative signal that increases the number of pulses as the engine speed increases. Some tachometers also have an illumination wire that is connected to the car's turn signal wire, causing the illumination of the new car display to activate along with the illumination of the original dashboard. All these wires are relatively easy to find in the car, except for the pulsating negative signal, which varies with each car model. To find this tachometer signal wire, there are basically 3 ways that vary depending on the car. If the car has electronic injection, then the ECU itself should have an output wire for the tachometer (original dashboard tachometer). This wire should be connected to the green wire of the tachometer. To find this wire, it is necessary to analyze the electrical diagram and identify this wire directly on the ECU connector. In carbureted cars, the tachometer signal can be found on the ignition coil, which has 3 connections: 1 output to the spark plug distributor, 1 positive input connected to signal 15 of the car, and 1 negative input coming from the points or electronic ignition module. This last negative from the coil is the correct signal that we must connect to the green wire of the tachometer. If the car, truck, tractor, or grader has a diesel engine, then it is not possible to connect the tachometer signal in the previous ways. In this case, it will be necessary to disassemble the alternator and solder a wire directly to one of the stator wires that is directly connected to the rectifier bridge. Thus, as the alternator rotates, the stator pin will generate the negative pulse to inform the number of revolutions per minute given by the alternator and consequently by the engine.
