I Used AI to Design Our Camper Graphics… Then a 40-Year Sign Painter Took Over

We used AI to help design custom graphics and branding for our homemade DIY overland camper—but turning an AI-generated idea into something that actually worked on the camper took a lot more than simply typing a prompt! While Tristan was away at Scouts summer camp, I decided it was finally time to transform the plain exterior of the DIY camper we built together. I used AI to help develop and visualize different camper graphic ideas, experimenting with outdoor adventure designs, mountains, pine trees, topographic map lines, our Explore, Discover, Adventure, Together branding, and our @NickandTristan YouTube channel name. The AI didn't get everything right the first time—not even close! 😂 We went through multiple designs, changed the layout, simplified the graphics, adjusted the topographic lines, worked around the windows and storage compartments, and created different designs for both sides and the rear of the camper. But AI only helped us develop and visualize the idea. The finished graphics were not AI printed, vinyl wrapped, or painted by a machine. Once we had the design we wanted, Charlie, who works with me at my shop and has more than four decades of experience in traditional sign painting and pinstriping, hand-painted the graphics onto the camper using our design as the guide. We used a projector to transfer the design onto the camper, combining modern AI-assisted design with over 40 years of old-school sign-painting skill. The result completely changed the look of our homemade off-road camper and finally gave the camper an identity that matches what our channel is all about: Explore. Discover. Adventure. Together.
