Exploring a Hidden Welsh Valley • Ancient Celtic Rainforest

Welcome to Part 1 of my two-day visit to the Rhinogydd Mountains. While planning my route on OS Maps for a two-night adventure in the Rhinogydd Mountains, I spotted a lake hidden away in a secluded valley and surrounded by woodland. After looking into it, I discovered it was part of a rare Celtic rainforest, so I decided to include it in my two-day circular hike around the Rhinogs. I spent the afternoon exploring the valley before making my way to the southern foothills of the Rhinogydd, where I set up camp, ready for the climb to Rhinog Fach the following day. The terrain was unforgiving and made finding a suitable pitch almost impossible, but thankfully, I stumbled across a boarded-up shooting lodge towards the end of the day.
