Twitter @juangangel Jardín is a municipality located in the southwest of Antioquia. Jardín has a population of 14,000, 7,000 women and 7,000 men. It borders the municipalities of Andes, Jericó, and Támesis to the north, the municipality of Támesis to the east, the department of Caldas to the south, and the town of Andes to the west. Its capital is 134 kilometers from the city of Medellín, capital of the department of Antioquia. It has an area of ​​224 square kilometers. Available archaeological data suggests that the earliest known date of the present-day municipality of Jardín, Antioquia, would be before the Spanish conquest. Evidence, such as some tombs found around the municipal seat, suggests that the territory was inhabited by indigenous people, most likely Catíos of the Chamí ethnic group. The latter were wandering descendants of the former, and also known as Docatoes because they settled in the upper reaches of the Docató River, or River of Salt, at that time. From there, available records take us back to 1860, the height of the Antioquia Colonization. In the midst of this colonizing enterprise, a settler named Indalecio Peláez took possession of vast territories between two streams known as Volcanes and El Salado. According to the Monographs of Antioquia published in 1941 by the Unión Brewery of Medellín, "Don Indalecio Peláez was accompanied by, among others, Raimundo and Jesús María Rojas, Juan, Antonio, José and Ignacio Ríos, Santiago, Lino, Pedro and Ceferino Colorado, Hipólito and Baltasar Arenas, Nicolás Rozo, Bonifacio Amelines, and Raimundo Gil." Regarding the name "Jardín" that this town bears, chronicles tell that when the founders arrived from the so-called Alto de las Flores, a town populated by seven-leather trees, they saw the valley, then a jungle, filled with white yarumos and crossed by two streams, and exclaimed: "This is a Garden!" Four years later, in 1864, the Rector of the University of Antioquia, Dr. José María Gómez Ángel, a distinguished priest, arrived in the region, accompanied by two other priests, all of whom were fleeing Medellín due to the persecution waged against them by the controversial ruler, General Mosquera. It was these inspired priests who came up with the idea of ​​founding a town right there, convincing the aforementioned neighboring farmers. The annals of this town of Jardín are full of beauty, tradition, and love. From the erection of the district's parish church, considered the most beautiful among Antioquia's semi-Gothic churches, to the present day, Jardín has repeatedly won first place in departmental competitions for ornamentation and beauty. Its Main Park, as an exceptional highlight, is a National Monument. As a visitor, it is impressive to observe the civic and committed nature of its residents. In its early days, Jardín depended on the neighboring and wealthy municipality of Andes, until it was established as an independent parish in 1871. In 1882, Jardín was established as a municipality by Dr. Luciano Restrepo, president of the then Sovereign State of Antioquia.
