It was unusually still on the road today; a silence that made us stop and wonder what was happening. Then we realized: it is Midsommar, the most important celebration in Sweden after Christmas, where the summer solstice and nature’s fertility are joyfully honored. Driving through the city of Gävle toward Bönan, we arrived in a picturesque old fishing village famous for its historic lighthouses and traditional fishing culture. It breathes an authentic atmosphere that fits this festive day perfectly. As we walked toward the lighthouse, taking in the wide views over the Bothnian Sea, we immediately understood why this is such an iconic place—what a beautiful spot to call home. Everywhere we looked, children and mothers were gathering flowers for the traditional wreaths they wear in their hair. We followed a group of people toward the beach, and soon, we saw the midsommarstång (maypole) being raised, beautifully decorated with greenery and flowers. It is wonderful to see how everyone, young and old, enjoys this feast of unity, dancing in a circle around the pole while a singer shares traditional songs. It is a delight for us, as travelers, to experience such an ancient tradition from so close by.
