Welcome to another episode of the "Pica o Pé no Pica Fio" series! Let's first identify who's who in this IDR, DDR and SDR thing. The Residual Current Device (RCD), popularly known as RCD, has been mandatory since 1997, according to NBR 5410. Its function is to de-energize the circuit whenever a current leakage occurs at any point in the electrical system. The installation of this device is highly important, as it is responsible for protecting people against the effects of electric shocks that can originate from leakage currents. The RCD works as follows: when a current leakage exceeds the RCD's maximum leakage current, the device identifies this leakage and automatically disconnects the circuit. In homes, we use RCDs with a maximum leakage current of 30 mA, because 30 mA is the maximum current intensity that a human being can withstand without causing any harm to their health. But it's good to know that there are RCDs with other leakage current values, such as 100mA, 300mA, and 1000mA, but these values are more commonly used in industries and are intended to protect the installation and equipment, not people! Now tell me: Do you know the models and how to identify each of these devices found on the market? The most famous is the RCD, but you've certainly heard of the RCCB and probably some RCCBs, so what's the difference between them? In practically every store that sells electrical materials, we can find the RCD. The acronym RCD, as you probably already know, stands for Residual Current Circuit Breaker, and this device only acts in an installation when it detects a current leakage. In addition to the RCD, there is also the RCCB. RCCB, folks, is the acronym for Residual Current Circuit Breaker. The DDR (Distributed Residual Current Device) is harder to find on the market, as few manufacturers produce this device and, when it is found for purchase, it has a very high price. So, if you need one of these, be prepared to spend a lot... Unlike the IDR (Residual Current Device), the DDR protects the installation's circuits not only against current leaks but also against short circuits and overloads, as the DDR has the function of both an IDR and a circuit breaker. Therefore, the price is worth the product, as we are talking about a 2-in-1 device. But then the question arises: How do I know when it's an IDR and when it's a DDR, André? If you visually compare the IDR and the DDR, they will be almost identical, like identical twins; almost no one can tell them apart. However, when you analyze the information contained on the packaging, casing, or manual of these devices, you will be able to differentiate one from the other. A quick way to differentiate these devices is by analyzing their casing. Here we have a DDR and an IDR from the same brand. As we know, circuit breakers have tripping curves, switches do not. So in image 1 we can see the letter C before the number 20 (which is its nominal current), this letter indicates that this device has a tripping curve, in this case curve C. The other device next to it does not have this letter, it only has the indication of the nominal current it supports, which indicates that it is an IDR. The model next to it, with the letter, is a DDR. In my opinion, this is the quickest and easiest way to identify whether your protection device is an IDR or a DDR. Otherwise, it is necessary to consult the manufacturer's manual.
