Their mission focuses on restoring wetlands, protecting communities, and strengthening Louisiana’s coastal economy for future generations. For thousands of years, the Mississippi River built Louisiana’s coast by depositing sediment across the delta. But levees, canals, rising seas, and industrial development have disrupted those natural processes, causing massive land loss across coastal Louisiana. Scientists estimate the state has been losing land at an alarming rate, sometimes equal to a football field every 100 minutes. To reverse this damage, restoration groups advocate for large-scale coastal projects such as sediment diversions, marsh creation, and barrier island rebuilding. These projects attempt to reconnect the river to surrounding wetlands, allowing fresh water and sediment to rebuild land naturally. Coalitions involved in Restore the Mississippi River Delta include organizations such as the Environmental Defense Fund, National Audubon Society, National Wildlife Federation, and Pontchartrain Conservancy. Together, they work to protect communities, wildlife habitats, and critical industries tied to Louisiana’s coast. The future of Louisiana depends on restoration. Without continued investment and action, coastal land loss threatens communities, infrastructure, culture, and industries that support the nation.
