Long before today's state-run lottery, Louisiana was home to one of the most powerful and controversial gambling enterprises in American history. Founded in 1868, the original Louisiana State Lottery Company grew into the only legal lottery in the United States, selling tickets nationwide and generating enormous profits. Supporters praised it for funding charities and state programs, while critics accused it of bribery, corruption, and political influence. Eventually known as the "Golden Octopus," the company became the center of one of Louisiana's biggest political battles before collapsing in the 1890s. More than a century later, voters approved the modern Louisiana Lottery Corporation, which now directs proceeds toward public education.
