GI Medication Selection, Contraindications, and Patient Counseling | Pharmacology Pre-Work Lecture 2

In this GI pharmacology pre-work lecture, we move beyond medication classes and focus on how to select appropriate GI and nutrition-related therapies based on patient-specific factors. Topics include acid suppression therapy, antiemetics, antidiarrheals, constipation medications, IBS and IBD therapies, prokinetics, pancreatic enzymes, weight-loss medications, artificial feeding considerations, supplements, contraindications, adverse effects, and patient counseling. This lecture also emphasizes red flags that require evaluation before symptomatic treatment, medication safety across the lifespan, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic considerations, social determinants of health, adherence, and legal and ethical prescribing responsibilities. By the end of this lecture, learners should be able to compare GI medication options, recognize contraindications and cautions, identify major adverse effects, and apply counseling strategies to promote safe and effective medication use.
