Measuring Well: Validity, Reliability, and Why the Difference Matters
In this talk, we tackle one of the most foundational concepts in epidemiology and clinical reasoning: how do you know if a measurement is any good? Whether it's a diagnostic test result, a blood pressure reading, or a disease count in a herd, every measurement must answer two questions — is it measuring the right thing (validity), and does it give the same answer consistently (reliability)? These two properties sound interchangeable, but they describe completely different things. Confusing them leads to real errors in how you interpret diagnostic tests, read research studies, and design surveillance programs. In this talk, you'll learn: The critical distinction between validity (accuracy) and reliability (precision) Why a measurement can be reliable without being valid — but never valid without being reliable The dartboard analogy: four scenarios that make the difference instantly intuitive Sources of systematic error (bias) vs. random error, and how to fix each How validity and reliability map onto diagnostic test evaluation — including sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility How these concepts extend to study design through internal validity, external validity, and reproducibility Series: Veterinary Epidemiology Mini-Talk Series Unit 1: Foundations of Clinical Reasoning Talk 4 of Unit 1 @VeterinaryEpidemiology Ideal for veterinary students, veterinary professionals preparing for the ACVPM board exam, and anyone interested in evidence-based veterinary medicine. #VeterinaryEpidemiology #Epidemiology #DiagnosticTesting #Validity #Reliability #VeterinaryMedicine #ACVPM #EvidenceBasedMedicine #ClinicalReasoning #VetMed
