Bell Ringing at St Magnus the Martyr, City of London
The second tower of the City of London Bellringing Tour for Dylan Thomas. St Magnus the Martyr has a 26cwt ring of twelve bells cast in 2008 & 2009 by Whitechapel Bell Foundry. They are the sister rings to Crediton and High Wycombe and also tuned to a Gillett and Johnston profile. The bells here have a rich and fine tone to them and sound very nice when rung well. I actually prefer these as a ten than a twelve as the trebles are slighty on the shrill side. Whilst Crediton are Kirnberger 3, these are just meantone temperament, which therefore means that the fifths are narrowed so that their ratio is slightly less than 3:2, making them narrower than a perfect fifth. The bells go okay, particularly round the front, but they are a pain to handle especially when ringing the 9th as the tower moves like a fairground ride. On the plus side, they are worth the effort as the bells are very rewarding. In this video you will hear rounds and call changes on twelve, followed by a touch of Stedman Triples on the back eight! Enjoy!
