Journey Through Time: A Miner's Tale - From Geevor to the Depths of History! ⚒️🔍 - Cornish Adit

Embark on a time-traveling adventure as I, a former miner at Geevor, guide you through the underground realms experienced by mine workers spanning two centuries. Join me on an insightful exploration, delving into the harsh realities faced by miners from 200 years ago up to the brink of modern times. We see the remains of a Cornish Bob Pit: A Cornish bob pit, also known as a Cornish whim, is a traditional mining apparatus used in Cornwall, England. It's an integral part of the mining engine system. The Cornish bob pit is associated with the operation of a whimsy, which is a type of winding engine used to raise and lower materials, miners, and ore in a mine shaft. The bob pit is essentially a deep pit or shaft adjacent to the mine, and it houses a large reciprocating beam. This beam is connected to the whimsy engine, and its movement is utilized to operate the winding gear in the mine shaft. The whimsy, powered by steam or other energy sources, would raise and lower the heavy loads using the reciprocating motion of the bob pit's beam. Adits: An adit is a horizontal or nearly horizontal passage driven into a mine from the surface. Unlike a vertical shaft, adits are driven into the side of a hill or mountain to access the underground workings. Adits are commonly used when an ore body is located inside the mountain but above the adjacent valley floor or coastal plain. They are driven into the rock to intersect the mineral veins. In cases where the mineral vein is exposed at the surface, the adit may follow the lode or vein until it is worked out. Adits can have various shapes and directions, and their alignment depends on the geology of the deposit. Adits are particularly useful for drainage, providing an outlet for water to flow out of the mine. They can also serve as access points for miners and materials without the need for vertical shafts. The term "drift mining" is often used when adits are employed for ore extraction. Drift mining involves following the ore body along the direction of the deposit using horizontal tunnels. In summary, a Cornish bob pit is a component of the winding system in a mine, while adits are horizontal passages driven into the side of a mountain or hill to access and extract minerals from underground deposits. Both play crucial roles in the historical mining practices of Cornwall.
