That Mill Is Finished Let It Go, the Duke Ordered — Her Scarlet Clothed a Regiment by Spring

"That Mill Is Finished. Let It Go," the Duke Ordered — Her Scarlet Clothed a Regiment by Spring Gloucestershire, spring 1812. When the young Duke of Wexcombe put his late father's outlying manor property up for sale, nobody asked the opinion of Miss Charlotte Merrick, a Stroud clothier's daughter who had kept her father's cloth-books since she was seventeen and could price a fleece, a warp and a finished piece by hand and eye. She gave it anyway — quietly, correctly, and once: the derelict Nether Fennis Mill was not a dead thing but a neglected one, its race silted, its stocks set wrong, its pond-head choked, and the coming army scarlet contract wanting exactly its water and its situation for anyone who troubled to walk up the hill and look. The Duke did not trouble. He did not even look up. "That mill is finished. Let it go," he told his man, within her hearing — and added that if Miss Merrick had views on broadcloth, she might cry them by the yard in her father's shop. She had bought the mill within the week — at the Duke's own asking figure, with her own money, under his own agent's astonished pen. The valley laughed at her all spring. It stopped laughing in a dry, wheel-stopping summer, when her scoured race and ponded water kept her stocks falling while every mill in the bottom stood still; when the county searcher condemned the Duke's own strained, false-measured scarlet and clenched his lead seal on hers; when her sound cloth saved the Ordnance delivery the Duke was about to forfeit, and her sealed pattern won the great new army contract he had assumed was his by right of rank. What happened when the most careful, most dismissive Duke in the county audited his own cooked mill-books, discovered the clothier's daughter had been right about everything, and drove to a tradesman's counting-house in Stroud to ask her terms — and what she made him confess before the whole cloth hall — is the part of this story worth staying for. He is not punished, and he does not grovel. He is out-measured, converted by the evidence, and lost entirely — and she never once raised her voice.
