Keep to Your Needlework, the Baron Told Her — Her Counter Paid in Gold When His Bank Shut

"Keep to Your Needlework," the Baron Told Her — Her Counter Paid in Gold When His Bank Shut Norfolk, autumn 1825. When the young Baron Harcombe put his name and his fortune to the head of the splendid new marble bank that was to make the town's fortune, nobody asked the opinion of Miss Charlotte Merrow, a Fenbridge banker's daughter who had kept the little Old Bank's books and weighed its gold across the counter since she was eighteen and knew to the sovereign how many notes her house had out and how much coin lay in the strong-room to answer them. She gave it anyway — quietly, correctly, and once: the grand new bank had poured out three and four notes for every sovereign behind them and lent the town's deposits long on glittering land, and a bank is worth only what it can pay across the counter the day the whole town comes asking. The Baron did not trouble to check his own till. He did not even look up from a fashionable London prospectus. "Gold in a drawer is idle money; keep to your needlework, Miss Merrow," he told his man, within her hearing — and added that if she had views upon the theory of credit, she might retail them to the sewing-circle. She had declined his bank's offer to buy out the little Old Bank within the week — and put Merrow's publicly on a pay-every-note-in-gold footing, her own reserve staked upon it, and bought up the grand bank's own notes at a discount besides. The county laughed at her hoarding all year. It stopped laughing in the great money-fright of that December, when a London house stopped payment and the whole country rushed the banks to turn paper into gold; when the marble County Bank could not find the coin and shut its doors; and when Merrow's plain counter stayed open through the panic and paid every note in gold, calm and steady, the one door in the county left open — and the London house's own commissioner weighed both reserves and found the grand bank a fair front over a hollow strong-room, over-issued and speculated for years by the Baron's own manager. What happened when the most modern, most dismissive man in the county discovered the banker's daughter had been right about everything, came to a plain counter to ask her terms — and what she made him confess before the whole county at the creditors' meeting — is the part of this story worth staying for. He is not punished, and he does not grovel. He is out-weighed, converted by the evidence, and lost entirely — and she never once raised her voice.
