A Special Feature! Sammy describes engine induction with hands-on examples. Plus the 1966 Motobi!
In the Special Feature Sammy describes the various types of engine induction developed since the early half of the twentieth century to the present day. How fuel gets into an engine is critical to the engine's operation and Sammy uses hands-on examples from the Museum's exhibits to explain the different designs in a simple-easy to understand way. Examples used include the: 200cc Puch split single (demonstration engine in the Museum); '2-valves' with two spark plugs cylinder head; brilliant 1930 Rudge 4-valve radial (Ulster GP winner); conical valve (not a popular design); rare Aspen 500cc rotary valve design; Barr & Stroud sleeve valve (such as used by Bristol aircraft); Norton sleeve valve (developed by the great Joe Craig, Belfast); Butterworth early type of desmodromic valve (hopeful future Museum bike purchase). Sammy also gives a quick view of the bikes being worked on in the Museum Workshop, namely the 1949 Swallow Gadabout, Jim's Mondial, 1929 AJS record breaker and Velocette vertical twin. Finally we see the latest acquisition for the Italian Hall, the 1966 Motobi Sports Special. It's a 5-speed, overhead valve machine with heal and toe gear shifter. Watch Sammy take it for a spin around the Museum courtyard!
