C'est pas sorcier -FORTIFICATIONS DE VAUBAN

The official channel of the France 3 program. It's Not Rocket Science, the science and discovery magazine. Sébastien Le Pestre de Vauban was Commissioner of Fortifications during the reign of Louis XIV. All around the French borders, he protected towns by building ramparts with unusual shapes. Fred and Jamy set off to explore the constructions of this brilliant engineer, who was both a talented architect and a shrewd military strategist. Mission: Fred has gone to discover one of the most beautiful fortified places built by Vauban: Saint-Martin-de-Ré, on the Île de Ré. Glacis, covered walkways, and secret passages... he explores the ramparts in minute detail to tell us how these citadels were defended under Louis XIV. We find him near the Île d'Oléron, at Fort Chapus. There, he explains how Vauban ensured the defense of the Charente coastline by building small forts in the open sea, under particularly difficult conditions, intended to block the passage of enemy ships.
