The Knights Templar emerged in the 11th century with the first Crusades. At its inception, this order of warrior monks was intended to train and protect the crusaders who departed for the Holy Land. Within two centuries, they acquired 9,000 commanderies throughout Europe, and their power grew to such an extent that they became the bankers of popes and kings.
