Optimize performance, metabolism & breathing #breathingtechniqueinswimming #threestrokeinswimming #swimmingtechnique Is this really the gold standard? Should you absolutely master the three-stroke in freestyle swimming? Is one only technically proficient if one can swim the three-stroke technique? Is the three-stroke technique even the optimal technique in competition? Many questions – one topic. Let's take a closer look, and the situation will quickly become very clear. No, the three-stroke technique is not a competitive technique. We've already discussed this topic in this tip (link in the article). Nevertheless, it's worth reiterating the importance of verifying assumptions in practice. Looking at world-class swimming, we see that no one swims with the three-stroke technique. Long pauses between breaths are a disadvantage The reason is easy to find. Swimmers at high intensity cannot afford the long pauses between breaths that result from the three-stroke technique. We provide numerous examples of this in the video (see below). Is the three-stroke rhythmic? This technique is potentially much less rhythmic than a two-stroke technique! Switching between your preferred breathing side (there will be one) and a less effective breathing technique on the other side can lead to an uneven swimming style. So why "torture" yourself by learning a breathing technique that creates more difficulties than it helps your swimming speed? This article—as well as the examples in the video—is intended to encourage you, as a coach or athlete, to perhaps rethink this topic. Because, as always, it's important to constantly re-examine and question existing assumptions. Have fun putting it into practice! A contribution by Holger Lüning
