Restoration of Mysterious Relic - Revealing a Battlefield Artifact Hi! A new find relic, a new story. The condition of the object was, of course, very poor. At first glance, it was unclear what it was or what it was used for, but that is exactly the kind of object I am interested in, so I was happy to take it. After carefully unwrapping it, I did not immediately understand what I was holding in my hands. The first thing that stood out was the design — very interesting and unusual. I had never encountered anything like it before. The first thing I did was separate the main part of the object into two pieces. One part I placed in a mixture of salt, ammonia, flour, and vinegar. This is an excellent solution that cleans slowly but effectively and, most importantly, non-aggressively. The second part, which I understood to be made of iron, I placed in a rust-removal solution for several days while I worked on the main piece. On the second day, after removing the object from the mixture, I realized that it was most likely a lighter. Probably from the era of the First World War — a piece of trench art created by soldiers. From that moment, I began a more thorough cleaning process. The condition was extremely bad: the wheel had literally been rust-welded to the main body. I had to spend a great deal of time just to open the object at all. For this, I used a torch, kerosene, and WD-40. Eventually, I managed to open the cylinder. Inside, there was nothing but dirt and the remains of the wick. After that, I cleaned everything once again using kerosene and solvent, then boiled the part in water with citric acid. Only after all these steps was I able to move the wheel. During the disassembly of the lower part of the body, it became clear that all the internal components would need to be replaced — the flint, the spring, and the screw — as the original screw had deformed over time and had essentially rotted away. After replacing the screw, I moved on to making the lid. I checked everything, and the mechanism worked. However, since I do not have a metal lathe, I had to visit a friend who is a machinist. Using duralumin, he machined the shape I had requested and predicted in advance, and fitted it to the thread of the lower body. After returning home, I refined the object using sandpaper and a soft sponge, then lightly polished it. Next, I moved on to making a leather case. By the way, the first leather case did not work out because I miscalculated the dimensions. I always show my mistakes in my videos. On the second attempt, I made a simple and clean case. I added a grommet and an extra ring so it can be worn on a belt or attached to another belt clip. And of course, I carried out a small test.
