3 Days Alone on a Remote River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
I was dropped off at the end of a remote logging road in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with one goal: bushwhack my way to a wild trout river, follow it for nearly 15 miles and make it to my pickup point three days later. There were no trails, no roads and no guarantee the fishing would be worth the effort. On day one, I pushed through a half mile of thick brush just to reach the river. I began working downstream through tangled timber, steep ridges, blowdowns and some of the nastiest bush I've been through in a long time. The work finally paid off with an incredible fish toward the end of the first day and I set up camp for the night on a sandy riverbank shortly after. By the second morning, I woke up feeling sick, but kept pushing downstream. The day turned into one of the most memorable days of river fishing I’ve ever had, with beautiful fish, wolf sign, a deer kill, eagles, crows, and a wild stretch of river that felt completely alive. This was a true Upper Peninsula adventure — bushwhacking, camping, fishing, wildlife, fire, coffee, fresh fish dinner and three days alone on a remote river. Thanks for watching and coming along for the adventure. -Kyle
