Jānis Sprukts: Starp AHL eliti un Floridas "Panthers" sapni #latvia
Janis Sprukts’ career path in the North American hockey system began after his debut at the 2000 World Championship in Saint Petersburg. That same summer, the Florida Panthers selected Sprukts in the NHL Entry Draft with the 234th overall pick, leading to his first major overseas experience in the QMJHL with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. During his debut season, Janis became the team’s second-highest scorer, racking up 79 points in 63 regular-season games and adding another 22 points in the playoffs, proving that his unique skating style was no barrier to his efficiency on the ice. Despite his dominant performance, missing out on the Memorial Cup remained one of the greatest disappointments of his career, which, according to the player himself, hindered his stock in the eyes of scouts. Following a championship title in Finland with HPK, Sprukts arrived in Florida in 2006. However, his transition was immediately stalled by a logistical mishap, his gear failed to arrive on time, forcing him to compete in his first NHL training camp using unfamiliar equipment. He spent the majority of his time with the AHL’s Rochester Americans, centering a high-powered line alongside Drew Stafford and Clarke MacArthur, finishing his farm club season with 59 points in 58 games. Janis scored his first unofficial NHL goal in a preseason clash against the legendary Dominik Hasek, while in the regular season, he found the back of the net against the Tampa Bay Lightning and recorded points against the New York Rangers. During his second North American stint in 2008, playing alongside fellow Latvian Karlis Skrastins, his bid to secure a permanent NHL roster spot was derailed by an ill-timed leg injury and head coach Peter DeBoer’s tactical vision. Over two seasons in the AHL, Janis Sprukts amassed 106 points in 117 games, while his NHL career concluded with 14 games played, 1 goal, and 2 assists. #hockey #hokejs #latvia #ahl #nhl #latvija #sprukts #panthers #americans
