In the late 1989 winter, Riga Dinamo embarked on a historic Super Series tour across North America, measuring their strength against the absolute elite of the National Hockey League. Coming off a spectacular Soviet Championship silver medal performance, the Latvian club crossed the Atlantic to prove their world-class level on NHL ice. In the thrilling opening match, Riga demonstrated incredible grit to secure a shocking 2-2 tie against the powerhouse Calgary Flames, who would go on to lift the Stanley Cup just months later. Aleksandrs Kerčs and Saša Beļavskis found the back of the net for Riga, while Artūrs Irbe was a brick wall in goal. This was followed by a tightly contested 1-2 battle against the legendary Edmonton Oilers dynasty. The lone Latvian goal came from Harijs Vītoliņš, who fooled the Hall of Fame goaltender Grant Fuhr with a masterful, cold-blooded deke.
