Her connection to the country dates back to the times of Independence, when the leaders of the Liberating Army—Bernardo O'Higgins and José de San Martín—entrusted her as Patroness and General of the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement. The main act of devotion in northern Chile is the La Tirana festival, celebrated every year on July 16 in the town of the same name.
