The codex book—a stack of sheets bound together along one side—is a remarkably successful human invention. Before materializing, the codex long festered in the depths of history and culture. Emerging nearly two thousand years ago, the codex book continued to evolve alongside the world order and human society, adopting technological advances such as paper, typesetting, and printing. Over time, the paper book, as a global library system, as an industry, and as a medium, became one of the foundations of civilization. The culture of preparing book content for publication underlies information management in all fields. Books were created by people to meet their needs. But books also shaped people. Together, books and people form an ecosystem honed over generations. Throughout the existence of this tandem, books and people have undergone changes: shifting economic systems, the emergence of new technologies, and globalization. Each time, books have adapted. Today, books have been supplanted by electronic media, and they are forced to rethink their role in the new digital world. It seems that the role of books is becoming conservative, aimed at preserving the human way of life and the values shaped by book culture. Working with a book today is a way to slow down, reflect, and explore one's interests—ultimately, a way for people to return to themselves and love themselves. According to an eyewitness, a line stretching 200 meters formed in Berlin on May 30th for the opening of the new bookstore, The Naughty Chapter. This is just one example among thousands of testimonies proving that paper books continue to play an important role in our lives. The fact that the new bookstore specializes in romance novels makes this example even more compelling. A book is sometimes perceived as a kind of "flower of love," a combination of form and meaning that is inescapable. Anyone who reaches for a paper book today can safely be called a bibliophile. To better understand the anatomy of this love, we have prepared the exhibition "The Art of the Book. From Sign to Media" and offer it to your attention. It continues the annual series of exhibitions dedicated to books held by the HSE School of Art and Design Gallery at the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art. The exhibition introduces the main structural components of a book, presented in sections of the same name and arranged in order of increasing scale: "Sign," "Strip," "Spread," "Block," "Object," and "Media." Basic concepts of book design are demonstrated through the work of students at the HSE School of Art and Design. To enhance the reader's understanding of book subjects, the exhibition is complemented by works by contemporary artists who offer original interpretations of book standards.
