Why California’s Most Famous Mansion is Totally Forbidden
Support the Channel by becoming a member 👉 / @itshistory Hidden behind an iron fence in Eureka, California, stands a Victorian mansion so famous it has been called the second most photographed private residence in America. Built between 1884 and 1886 by lumber baron William Carson, the ornate house cost the equivalent of several million dollars in today's money, employed over a hundred craftsmen from as far away as Ireland and Switzerland, and imported exotic hardwood from South America. Carson built it to reflect the grandeur of the redwood empire he had created almost from nothing — and from the moment it was finished, crowds gathered outside just to look at it. Today the Carson Mansion is privately owned by the Ingomar Club, a members-only organization that has maintained the interior in near-original condition since 1950. There are no public tours. Interior photography requires special permission. In 1974, a California state official was turned away at the door during an official visit. In this episode, we trace the life of the man who built it, the fortune behind it, and why — more than 140 years later — almost no one is allowed inside. #ItsHistory #CarsonMansion #VictorianHistory IT’S HISTORY - Weekly Tales of American Urban Decay as presented by your host Ryan Socash. • IT'S HISTORY 🔥 Trending » Subscribe: / @itshistory » Listen podcasts: https://ffm.bio/itshistory » CONTACT For brands, agencies, and sponsorships: [email protected] Click here to book a sponsorship with me http://thoughtleaders.io/reserve/its-... » DISCLAIMER Some media elements in this video are used under the fair use provisions of U.S. copyright law (Title 17, Section 107) for purposes of commentary, criticism, and education.
