Built between 1884 and 1886 by lumber baron William Carson, the ornate house cost the equivalent of several million dollars in today's money, employed over a hundred craftsmen from as far away as Ireland and Switzerland, and imported exotic hardwood from South America. Carson built it to reflect the grandeur of the redwood empire he had created almost from nothing — and from the moment it was finished, crowds gathered outside just to look at it. Today the Carson Mansion is privately owned by the Ingomar Club, a members-only organization that has maintained the interior in near-original condition since 1950. There are no public tours. Interior photography requires special permission. In 1974, a California state official was turned away at the door during an official visit.
