It runs for 79.562 km from west to east in the northern part of the island, from Florinas (where it intersects with the Carlo Felice state road 131) to Olbia. It crosses the province of Sassari and the subregions of Monteacuto and Gallura. It is managed by the Sassari department of the ANAS (Italian National Roads Authority). The road is classified as a main extra-urban road and, once completed, will be accessible at a maximum speed of 110 km/h. The genesis of this artery can be traced back to the need for a fast connection between the northwestern part of Sardinia, specifically the cities of Sassari and Porto Torres, and the opposite shore, specifically the city of Olbia. In the past, the two cities were connected by part of the Sardinia-Periferica national road 112. With the establishment of the Autonomous State Road Company, the Northern Sardinian state road 127 was established, which presented and still presents problems due to the winding nature of the terrain. Before the creation of the SS 729, the Sassari-Olbia route consisted of the Logudoro state road 597 and the Monti state road 199. The first was a fast road with virtually no at-grade intersections, allowing for faster travel by avoiding the towns of Ozieri, Oschiri, and Monti; the second, passing through Monteacuto, however, significantly lengthened the route. Increasing traffic and the suboptimal condition of these infrastructures prompted a more radical solution, with plans for a road with separate carriageways and two lanes in each direction as early as 1971. This prompted the Council of Ministers to declare a state of emergency, and the Sardinians to organize protest demonstrations. As early as 2007, the ANAS planning program included a similar artery, but it was only approved in 2012, with the project being awarded to ANAS on June 20. The new artery involves both the construction of new sections, such as the initial section connecting to the Carlo Felice state road 131 south of Codrongianos, and the upgrading of the existing SS 199 and SS 597. The work, especially in the initial phase, was subject to delays, which both increased costs and pushed back the opening date of the artery to traffic. As of December 2020, 60 kilometers of the new four-lane road were open to traffic out of the total 80 kilometers of the project. As of July 31, 2023, 9 of the 12 kilometers of Lot 2 are open, including the link road connecting the Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio junction to Ozieri. The road begins at kilometer 192 from the Carlo Felice state road 131, just south of Codrongianos. After almost 3 kilometers, the road junction with the SS 597 road is reached, following the same route (now modernized) as far as Ardara, for a total of 11.8 km. The second operational section has a compressed length of 11.9 km and extends between km 24.200 and km 36.100 in the municipalities of Ozieri and Oschiri. The third operational section has a total length of approximately 33 km and extends from the Berchidda Est junction to the entrance to the city of Olbia.
