El cactus que sobrevivió a todos los imperios — y que la ciencia comprueba contra la diabetes tipo 2

The symbol that Mexico carries on its flag is also one of the most documented remedies for diabetes—the disease that kills the most Mexicans today. The prickly pear cactus is not just a symbol of national identity: it is a clinically proven medicine that the pharmaceutical industry cannot patent. The prickly pear cactus nourished and healed the civilizations of the highlands for more than 9,000 years. The Mexica physicians of the Cruz-Badiano Codex (1552) used it to treat symptoms that we now recognize as type 2 diabetes. After the Conquest, this knowledge was relegated to "Indian medicine," although it never disappeared from popular markets. The turning point came in the 20th century: NAFTA dismantled peasant agriculture, industrialized food replaced the traditional diet, and Mexico went on to have one of the highest rates of diabetes in the world. In 1988, Dr. Arturo Frati Munari published in Diabetes Care the first clinical study documenting the hypoglycemic effect of the prickly pear cactus. Since then, researchers from UNAM and Cinvestav have identified the mechanisms: mucilage that slows glucose absorption, flavonoids that inhibit digestive enzymes, and prebiotic effects on the gut microbiota. ⚠️ NOTICE: This video is for educational purposes only and does not replace medical advice. Prickly pear cactus may interact with hypoglycemic medications—consult your doctor before incorporating it into your diet if you are currently taking medication.
