In the land of junk food, agriculture is controlled by two magic words: productivity and profitability. We investigate the excesses of American agribusiness. The two million farmers in the United States are formidable entrepreneurs. XXL farms, feedlots, and pesticides: anything goes as long as it produces more and more. In Midwestern cattle feedlots, thousands of animals are crammed into pens without a single blade of grass, fattened, and pumped full of growth hormones. These are industrial methods taken to the extreme. Every year, the nation's farmers gather at the Farm Machinery Show in Kentucky, the pinnacle of the American agricultural industry. There, they can find tractors worth millions of dollars and a spectacle that its fans wouldn't miss for the world: the tractor race, the most prestigious in the country. In California, we investigate how the gigantic carrot, artichoke, and strawberry farms operate. And we will see how, faced with water scarcity, farmers rush to irrigate, even if it means depriving the region's inhabitants of access to drinking water.
