The heat in João Pessoa is different… and now there's a scientific explanation. A study by the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) revealed an increase of approximately 4.5°C in the surface temperature of the capital city over the last nine years. In this video, you'll understand what's behind this change and how urban growth is transforming the city's climate. Through satellite imagery and detailed analysis, the study identified areas with greater thermal discomfort, especially in neighborhoods like Manaíra, Tambaú, and Jardim Oceania. But the most important thing is to understand why this is happening. Deforestation, soil sealing, increased use of air conditioning, and the growth in the number of vehicles are some of the factors that help explain this scenario. More than just numbers, this video shows how these changes are already being felt in the daily lives of the population—and raises an important question about the city's future. João Pessoa can still grow… but at what cost? According to the research, one of the main factors is the occupation of land by large tourism business groups and deforestation on the southern coast of the municipality. Several developments are being built in the region and, every day, they encroach on the vegetation, suffocating green areas. The southern zone of the city has already lost and continues to lose a large amount of vegetation in recent years. From the Castelo Branco area to the southern coast, trees are being felled daily for the sake of construction. When it comes to temperature in João Pessoa, the southern zone of the city is a crucial area. This is because, most of the time, the winds that reach the city come precisely from this direction. Without vegetation in the southern zone, the balance of the capital's natural temperature tends to disappear, and everyone will suffer as a result. 📌 Watch until the end and understand how urban decisions today can directly impact the quality of life in the coming years. 📊 Topics covered in the video: Temperature increase in João Pessoa Urban heat islands Impacts of urban growth Deforestation and loss of green areas Urban planning and sustainability UFPB research RESEARCH TITLE: Interactions between urbanization, heat islands, and thermal comfort in João Pessoa, Brazil.
