Solid wood window sills. Often the first thought when it comes to a good window sill is solid wood! Expensive, rich. But I strongly advise against it. From experience, it's a gamble. Ordinary wood is too heavy in such a heat- and moisture-stressed area under the window; there's a high risk of it warping, peeling varnish, etc. It's not for nothing that the window sills are pinched by slopes to minimize the risk of warping. And hence, due to the inertia of thinking, people continue to create "ears" on plastic, stone, and other window sills that pose no such risk. It's reminiscent of the story of how Africans, receiving humanitarian aid after an airplane's landing, began building airplanes out of straw themselves, hoping for feedback. But no, window sills don't need earing "for aesthetics." These earings formed naturally when a rectangular board was pinched, and we've simply gotten used to seeing them, while almost all modern window sills no longer need them. 2. Modern Window Sills 2.1 Plastic The most affordable option is, of course, plastic. It's moisture-resistant and costs next to nothing. 2.2 Not quite a window sill, but the absence of a sill is also a viable alternative. Often, in modern finishing, the lower edge is simply finished in the same way as the slopes. But it's important to understand that using such a window sill without damaging it over time will be difficult. Perhaps you could just install a light fixture. 2.3 Next on my personal list is a window sill made of compact laminate or HPL board, a self-supporting plastic. This is simply a piece of plastic with a printed pattern, often used in countertops. A definite advantage is its carefree attitude to the difficulties of living under a window and the ability to create complex trim around the window without fear of warping. It's not as cold to the touch as stone, but certainly not natural wood. A relatively budget-friendly alternative in terms of durability and tactile feel would be a quartz vinyl finish on this surface. This one has had this finish for 10 years now, so you can sit on it without any damage, naturally. 2.4. Stones, both natural and artificial, and acrylic are excellent in terms of reliability, but not so great in terms of cost. And, without heating, you won't be able to sit on it without a lining—you'll freeze your tail off. Most acrylic panels are 12mm thick, and the thickness of the product is determined by the edge. 2.5. If you absolutely want a natural and warm feel, then veneered MDF is our choice. More generally, it's a furniture-grade window treatment. MDF is much more stable than solid wood, and there's every chance your window sill will survive and delight you. Such a window sill looks very appropriate and presentable in almost any interior. If you're looking for minimalism and super-practicality, then this is the perfect window sill. To add practicality to the finished surface, we used large-format porcelain tiles instead of putty. In this case, it's laminam. These 3x1 meter slabs are dyed throughout to match the color of the surface. This allows for beautiful edges even without filler. Incidentally, customers are increasingly choosing 3x1 meter porcelain tiles to avoid horizontal seams and add a premium feel to the finish. When finishing bathrooms and toilets, vertical stripes are cut from these sheets to create windowsills. This applies, of course, if the chosen tile matches the room's color, but often the base tile is muted, light, and blends in well. Laminam, 3.5 mm thick, is additionally reinforced with fiberglass mesh. It is very durable, yet extremely easy to work with, as it can be cut with a glass cutter and glass tools. Edge filing is also faster due to its thinness, and can be finished with a diamond sponge.
