【建築物語】都会を離れ、宮古島で見つけた“自然と生きる暮らし” - 継承する家|CLAIR archi lab

The site is located in an old village surrounded by fields, about a 20-minute drive from the city center of Miyakojima, a remote island in Okinawa Prefecture. A couple who were transferred to Miyakojima from outside the prefecture decided that the naturally rich island would be their home, and after searching for land, they came across this one. The site was covered in a lush and chaotic mixture of plants, some of which may have been original to the island, some planted by indigenous residents or even earlier generations, including a large cycad, some Ryukyu pines, banyan trees, snowbells, barringtonias, and bottle palms, all of which are thought to be the oldest on the island, as well as mango trees. However, the couple were attracted by the site's long history and expressed their desire to become new residents, leading them to decide to move to Miyakojima and build a home. When I consulted about the design and saw the site, I could immediately sense the couple's feelings when they decided to live here. The plants on this site are so attractive and powerful, and I felt that they have a long history, and that this is land that must be passed on to the next generation. Therefore, when designing, I first surveyed the locations of the existing plants and drew a diagram, then proposed a layout that would preserve as many of them as possible. I planned each room with the space where the cycads and Ryukyu pines, which are central to the site, as the core of the site, and by carefully considering the size and placement of the openings of each room as well as the volume of the building, I designed it so that the plants on the site, which have an overwhelming presence, would become one with the architecture. Architecturally, to blend in well with the greenery of the plants and the blue sky of Miyako Island without interfering with it, I used a dull exposed concrete finish both inside and out, and kept the amount of finishing materials on the floors and ceilings to a minimum, resulting in a building that will gain more character over time. In modern architecture, gardens are often planned as something to be enjoyed and soothed by looking at from inside the building, but we believe that the building we have planned this time will be an architecture that can be seen from the outside through the plants, and will grow together with the nature of the land, and will eventually become a building that will blend into the land and be passed down over a long history. ...
