Packing Salmon with Horses from Alaska's Copper River
After weeks of building fish wheels, we decided it was time to slow down and enjoy some of our own backyard. We saddled up the horses for an overnight trip to a remote public use cabin, spent the evening swimming in a mountain lake, foraged a few mushrooms, and cooked dinner over an open fire. The next morning, we headed to the fish wheel to pack home another load of Copper River salmon. The next run has arrived, the fish are stacking up, and the smoker is ready. Back at the homestead, we filled the smoker with fresh salmon and ended the day with moose tacos topped with homemade rhubarb salsa from the garden. This trip was another great step in preparing the horses for what's ahead. We can't wait to take these boys on a spike camp this hunting season and, hopefully, bring a moose home to fill the freezer!
