So the king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for there was a great high place there. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5. At night in Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream. God said, “What shall I give you? Ask.” 6. Solomon said, “Your servant, my father David, walked before You with faithfulness, righteousness, and an upright heart; therefore You showed him great favor. And You have always shown him this great favor, giving him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today.” 7. O LORD my God, You have made your servant king in the place of your father David, but I am a small child and do not know how to go in or out. 8. I am among Your chosen people, a great people, so numerous that they cannot be counted. It is impossible to record 9. Who can judge this great multitude of your people? Grant your servant a discerning heart to judge your people and to distinguish between good and evil. 10. Solomon asked for this, and the Lord was pleased with his request. 11. Then God said to him, “You have asked for this: You have not asked for long life for yourself, nor for wealth, nor to destroy the life of your enemies; but you have asked for wisdom to hear and discern cases. 12. I will do as you have asked and give you a wise and discerning heart.
