Sociopolitical History of the Mexican Revolution | The Crisis of the Porfiriato. Javier Garciadiego | Session 1 May 6, 2026 Grandes Maestros.UNAM Description The Mexican Revolution was a broad, complex, and prolonged social phenomenon that inevitably became the determining factor in Mexico's evolution throughout the 20th century. Its beginning is canonically dated to November 1910, although it obviously had antecedents and precursor processes. In turn, its end date is a topic that has generated serious debates, both historiographical and political. In this first session, Dr. Garciadiego, director of the Mexican Academy of History, analyzes the social context and the contemporary crises: economic, political, social, and cultural—key factors that led to the inevitable fall of the Porfirian regime and marked the beginning of a new era in national history. Profile Javier Garciadiego Historian, academic, and researcher, he earned his bachelor's degree in Political Science from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM); he holds a master's degree in History from the University of Chicago and two doctorates: one in Mexican History from El Colegio de México, and another in Latin American History from the University of Chicago. He specializes in the history of the Mexican Revolution, particularly its socio-political and cultural aspects. He is a member of the National System of Researchers (emeritus); the Mexican Academy of History since 2008; the Mexican Academy of Language since 2013; and El Colegio Nacional since 2016. From 2013 to 2021, he served on the UNAM Governing Board. In 2021, he joined the Mexican Culture Seminar. He was the Director General of the National Institute for Historical Studies of the Mexican Revolutions and President of El Colegio de México (2005-2015), where he has been a professor and researcher since 1991. Since early 2017, he has been the Director of the Capilla Alfonsina; he was appointed Director of the Mexican Academy of History in February 2018. He has been a visiting professor at universities in Spain (Complutense University of Madrid, Autonomous University of Madrid) and the United States (University of Chicago and Columbia University). His written work includes titles such as "Rudos contra científicos" (Roughnecks vs. Scientists), "Alfonso Reyes: un hijo menor de la palabra" (Alfonso Reyes: A Minor Son of the Word), and his contribution to the "Nueva Historia Mínima de México" (New Concise History of Mexico) published by El Colegio de México. In 2022, he received an honorary doctorate from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and in 2026 from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL).
