San Juan Chamula, an indigenous village in Chiapas, Mexico. I stumbled upon a carnival and before I knew it, I was in the middle of the dance circle. It's a place where a unique culture, a blend of Mayan tradition and Catholicism, still thrives. And in fact, this village is almost completely independent from Mexico. Mexican police don't intervene. This village enjoys minimal outside interference and maintains strong autonomy based on its own unique customs. The police and judiciary also operate differently from typical systems, being run within the village itself. Among the Tzotzil villages around San Cristóbal, Chamula has a unique presence. If something happens, it will be dealt with within their rules. It's not particularly unsafe, and nothing scary happens, but it's like a favela. They basically set the rules here. And, as I mentioned at the beginning of the video, the Chamula people show a strong aversion to cameras. Therefore, I was hesitant about going to Chamula for a long time. Since I was traveling with Ryo for a limited time of 10 days, I wanted to film that journey. If the dates hadn't coincided with a Sunday, I probably would have skipped it. Although I did film the opening, I didn't go with the intention of shooting a video, After all, among the many Mayan villages, Chamula is unique and different in many ways, and in any case, shooting video in Chamula going forward would be troublesome with all the considerations involved, so I thought, since Ryo, the cameraman, was with us, and the dates of the regular market happened to coincide perfectly, I thought it would be good if I could convey the charm of Chamula through Ryo's photos. That's how I approached it. I completely forgot about the carnival. The town of San Cristóbal was more focused on Valentine's Day than carnival, and since the carnival dates change every year between February and March, I wasn't paying any attention to it at all. Therefore, it was incredibly lucky. Most of the people who reacted positively to my camera during this shoot were probably people who have gone to work in other countries, like the United States. Generally speaking, tourists don't usually think of Mexico specifically for Carnival; Brazil is the only option! However, Chamula offers the opportunity to hear dances and music with Mayan influences, and of course, it's a festival with its own unique charm. The contrast between the vibes of the regular markets and Chamula people and the vibes on Carnival day is incredible.
