Djibouti is a small but strategically vital country in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the west and south, and Somalia to the southeast, with coastlines along the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Its capital, also called Djibouti, is the political, economic, and cultural center of the country. With a population of roughly one million people, it is ethnically diverse, dominated by Somali (mainly Issa) and Afar communities, and Arabic and French are widely used alongside local languages. Djibouti’s importance comes largely from its location near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints linking the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean shipping routes. This has made the country a hub for international military bases, including forces from major powers that use Djibouti as a staging ground for operations in Africa and the Middle East. The port of Djibouti is a key gateway for landlocked Ethiopia’s trade and is being expanded to handle growing volumes of cargo, giving the country significant geopolitical and economic leverage. The climate in Djibouti is arid and extremely hot for much of the year, with very low rainfall and frequent droughts. Landscapes range from volcanic plateaus and rocky deserts to salt lakes such as Lake Assal, one of the lowest and saltiest points on earth, sitting more than 150 meters below sea level. These dramatic environments, along with its coastline, coral reefs, and marine life, are increasingly promoted for tourism, particularly for diving, whale shark encounters, and desert and volcanic trekking. Djibouti’s economy is driven mainly by services tied to shipping, logistics, and military presence, with limited agriculture due to harsh conditions and scarce arable land. The country uses the Djiboutian franc, and the government has pursued infrastructure projects with foreign partners to expand ports, rail links, and free trade zones. Despite this strategic role and investment, many residents face high unemployment, poverty, and limited access to basic services, making economic diversification and social development ongoing challenges. Politically, Djibouti is a republic with a strong presidency and has experienced relative stability compared with some of its neighbors, though concerns about democratic openness, press freedom, and human rights persist. The country is predominantly Muslim, and Islam plays a central role in social and cultural life.
