American Bandstand 1966 – What Now My Love, Sonny & Cher
Airdate: February 12, 1966 A few years ago, before I started posting, I used to search all over YouTube to find clips of American Bandstand from the 60’s. The best clips I found were on @ABdancers channel which featured many great montages of the 60’s dancers. I remember one montage that featured a particularly charming, adorable, happy dance couple who both had million-watt smiles. After watching that video several times, especially the brief clip of this song (at 2:10-2:18 today), I wondered who they were. Over the last 2 years I’ve learned that the boy is Frank Vanderpuil, winner of the 1967 Swing Dance Contest and who, sadly, has passed away but has been beautifully memorialized by @Jean Lankton on weremember.com. And, of course, the girl is Peggy (Waggoner) Names who went on to have a successful career in sound production in motion pictures (79 movies on her IMDb page including The Hangover Part 2, and Cast Away!) and now graciously comes and comments here regularly. Also dancing in today’s clip are: Lori Montgomery (1:27), Famous Hooks & June Strode (1:48), Jeff Hight & (the real) Melody McMurray (2:08), and Steven Schreiner (2:27) – if you are out there somewhere Steven @C. Steven Blue, we’d all love to hear from you! “What Now My Love” is at #28 today and will peak at #14 in 3 weeks. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for all of your many great comments over the years. I’m amazed how much you guys know about music, TV, dancing and pop culture from this era. I’ve learned a ton. I’m also thankful to have gotten to know some of the dancers from the show like Don and Peggy and others who have stopped by or who I have talked to offline. I have also loved hearing the stories of those who are no longer with us like Karen Sudlow, Judy Michaud, Bernie Kates, Roni Menacker, Forrest Hutchins and Frank Vanderpuil (all RIP). Thank you for watching and, if you happen to read this in the next 2 days, have a happy, super groovy Thanksgiving man!
