Starting in the 19th chapter of the history of philosophy, we will focus on the Middle Ages. In the previous chapter, we discussed the nature and possibilities of religious philosophy, as philosophy was monopolized by the clergy in Europe from the birth of Christianity until the 14th century. In this chapter, I want to discuss the general environment, beliefs, the fundamental tenets of these beliefs, and the debates between them. I will also discuss important sections of the sacred texts debated by medieval philosophers. The Middle Ages are divided into two periods: the period from the conversion of Constantine to the death of Boethius, a period dominated by the Roman Empire in 500 AD. A civilized society still existed; anyone of means could read and write, and a philosopher had to address both clergy and laity. However, after the time of Gregory the Great at the end of the 6th century, the distinction between clergy and laity became clear in the Western Christian world. This distinction persisted until the growth of a wealthy mercantile class, primarily in Italy, in the 13th century. So, when we talk about the Middle Ages, we're talking about a long period, 10 centuries. So how did religion remain so influential throughout this entire Middle Ages?
