Based on Judith Rossner's bestseller,old time director Richard Brooks'(Cat on a hot tin roof,the husband of the late great Jean Simmons) Looking For Mr. Goodbar was and still remains one of the most shocking films ever made. Whether you like it or hate it, there is no denying there is no other film like this. Diane Keaton gave the performance of her life, and it is generally agreed that she actually won for this film and not Annie Hall, but the Academy felt this film was too dirty. She portrays Theresa Dunn, a schoolteacher of the deaf who loses in love ,and pursues anonymous sex at discos at night.Tuesday Weld as her sister was nominated for a Supporting Oscar award. Richard Kiley as very good as Theresa's Father, and Alan Feinstein(husband of Natalie's sister, Lana) and William Atherton(Day of the Locust)was the good guy who tried to love her. This film was a breakthrough for Richard Gere and Tom Berenger. Major stardom came to Gere,and was close to the much more handsome and talented Berenger. Why he didnt become a superstar is a mystery? Could he have been difficult to work with?Film is based on the life of Roseanna Quinn. There is a fascinating Wikipedia about Ms. Quinn,, also a book Closing Time, which told the true story. More fascinating than the fictitious. In all aspects, this film still remains a hard R rating, though that finale is still the most distrurbing image ever on film. The soundtrack,which was briefly released on cd, included several great ,but edited songs . A superlative Try Me, I know we can make it edit by Donna Summer was the highlight of the album, and this, theme, Dont ask to stay until tomorrow, is superbly sung by Marlena Shaw, an oldtimer who was on the Chess label,home of Chuck Berry, and Etta James.
