Since we'll be using warm light, I apply the toning with cool black paint, and after wiping off excess moisture, a gray color appears. It's crucial to establish the correct tonal relationships, so we start with the darkest areas, then add a light accent, and build a tonal scale between these two points. This technique is suitable even if you're using acrylic or gouache, but the color properties of these paints will differ.
