Toddington Level Crossing, West Sussex

Date filmed: Tuesday the 4th of March 2025 Videos filmed between 12:59 and 13:17 Route: West Coastway Line Between Ford (FOD) / Littlehampton & Angmering (ANG) Stations Crossing type: Automatic Half Barrier Crossing (AHBC) Filming location: Toddington Lane, Littlehampton (BN17 7PW) The only automatic half barrier level crossing East of Arundel Junction on the West Coastway Line, this level crossing is in a quiet location on the edge of Littlehampton. The immediate location is pleasant, and feels more like a rural West Sussex village than the heavily built-upon suburb of Littlehampton it now is. All that remains from this crossing's commissioning in its current form in the 1990s is one Smiths Industries barrier still remaining, found on the west-bound line's side of the crossing and bearing an original nameplate. The other barrier is from 2014, and the LED wigwags and both alarms date back to 2019. Visible along the line looking west is the Tony Squires Bridge, built as part of a by-passing scheme for the nearby crossing on the very busy A284. This bridge will eventually carry the A284 once the final section linking the roundabout and North side of Lyminster village is complete (now believed to be the case as of some time between filming and publishing), and it is thought there could be a chance this level crossing may permanently close after the full completion of road re-modelling in the area.
