6 Deep Woods Mysteries That Have Never Been Solved
Six real documented cases from the Appalachian Trail corridor spanning 1946 to 2013 — six searches where the field log recorded something that did not make it into the final incident summary released to the public. All cases verified through NPS incident records, state police documentation, FOIA requests, family testimony and confirmed news archives. Case File 76-014. Trenny Lynn Gibson. Andrews Bald, Great Smoky Mountains, October 8th 1976. Sixteen years old. Walking in a line of forty students. She went around a rock outcropping. The student behind her followed three seconds later. Trenny was gone. Search logs record a thermal anomaly at the outcropping and footprints too deep for her weight moving uphill at impossible speed. Neither notation made the final summary. Case never closed. Case File 2013-ME-SAR. Geraldine Largay. Maine Appalachian Trail, July 2013. Vanished from a remote section. Search involved over one hundred personnel, helicopters and tracking dogs — the largest in Maine history. Her campsite was one hundred yards from a trail searchers walked every day for twenty six days. Her journal documents hearing them. Unusual radio interference was logged in that specific grid and attributed to terrain without investigation. Case resolved 2015 with recovery of remains. Case File 96-VA-SHEN. Lollie Winans and Julianne Williams. Shenandoah National Park, May 1996. FBI involvement confirmed. Over four consecutive nights search logs from four separate teams reference an unidentified observer — a man in a grey poncho on a ridge two miles from any trail watching the search through binoculars. When teams moved to intercept he walked behind a single tree and did not emerge. The FBI's internal designation in partially unredacted FOIA documents: The Witness. Case never conclusively closed. Case File 2008-GA-BLOOD. Blood Mountain, Georgia AT, 2008. Search volunteers reported gear displaced and found stacked three miles away on the trail. Multiple volunteers independently reported movement in the forest canopy tracking search teams below — movement inconsistent with any documented wildlife. Official classification: unidentified wildlife. Volunteers refused to return without armed escort. Case File 81-GSM-TM. Thelma Pauline Melton. Deep Creek, Great Smoky Mountains, October 8th 1981. Fifty eight years old. Hiking with two companions. She went around a trail bend seconds ahead of them. They came around the same bend. She was not there. Tracking dogs followed her scent to a specific point on the open trail and stopped. No terrain feature explains the scent break. No physical evidence ever found. Case never closed. Paula Jean Welden. Long Trail, Glastenbury Mountain Vermont, December 1st 1946. Eighteen years old. Witnessed by Ernest and Martha Whitman who maintained visual contact throughout the approach. Paula went around a trail bend. The Whitmans followed immediately. She was not there. No physical evidence ever found. The search prompted the creation of the Vermont State Police. Case never solved. Six folders. Six gaps between what the search log recorded and what the public summary released.
