Ernest Rutherford — Vom Kartoffelacker zum Vater der Kernphysik | Dokumentarfilm

Ernest Rutherford—the man who unlocked the very core of matter. Born in a simple wooden hut on the other side of the world, in Brightwater, New Zealand, the fourth of twelve children in an immigrant family, he became the father of nuclear physics and the first person in history to artificially transform an atom. His life's journey took him from his father's potato field to the humble laboratory barracks of Canterbury College in Christchurch, then to the hallowed halls of Cambridge, from Montreal to Manchester, and finally to the helm of the Cavendish Laboratory, the legendary research center from which twelve of his students would emerge as Nobel laureates. In this comprehensive biographical documentary, we accompany Ernest Rutherford through all the pivotal stages of his extraordinary life. We see the ten-year-old boy standing barefoot on the veranda during a thunderstorm, counting the seconds between the flash of lightning and the clap of thunder. We see the young scholarship recipient who loses the race to invent wireless communication to Guglielmo Marconi—and who, precisely as a result, becomes involved in the study of radioactive radiation, which will earn him the Nobel Prize. We witness the historic collaboration with Frederick Soddy in Montreal, which leads to the revolutionary theory of radioactive decay, and the fateful encounter with the young Niels Bohr, the fruit of which is the famous planetary model of the atom. At the heart of the story is that moment in 1919 when Rutherford, in a Manchester basement, triggers the first artificial nuclear reaction in human history, thus scientifically realizing the age-old goal of the alchemists. We meet Rutherford the teacher, affectionately and mockingly nicknamed "Crocodile" by his student Pyotr Kapitsa, and learn the secret of his unique pedagogy, which produced an entire generation of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century. We follow him to his tragic end—to that day in October 1937 when a British peerage law brought his life to a premature end, long before the world learned that his discoveries would lead to atomic energy. This documentary is for anyone who wants to learn more about the roots of modern physics, the history of science, and the fate of an extraordinary individual. It combines historical accuracy with vivid narration, making the scientific breakthroughs of a momentous era accessible even to viewers without a background in physics.
