Fritz Haber is one of the most contradictory figures in the history of science. It is estimated that around four billion people owe their existence to this process today. In 1919, Haber was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this achievement. And yet, numerous scientists refused to attend the award ceremony. For Fritz Haber was also the man who invented modern chemical warfare. He developed the use of chlorine gas as a weapon of mass destruction, was personally present at the first gas attack in history in Ypres on April 22, 1915, and for years directed the chemical warfare program of the German Reich. His institute later produced Zyklon B—the substance the Nazis used in the gas chambers of their extermination camps. This documentary tells the complete life story of Fritz Haber: from his childhood in Breslau, the early death of his mother, and his difficult relationship with his father, through his scientific breakthroughs in Karlsruhe and Berlin, to the darkest chapters of his work during the First World War. It illuminates his marriage to the chemist Klara Immerwahr, whose fate is inextricably linked to his own, and traces his path into exile after the Nazis seized power in 1933.
